Bonded Abrasive Wheels, Depressed Center Wheels, Reinforced Cutoff Wheels, Non-Reinforced Cutoff Wheels, Straight Wheels, Taper Cup Wheels, Straight Cup Wheels, Double Recessed Wheels, Cylinder Wheels, Segments

Product Used

Bonded to form a solid shaped tool such as disc, cylinder, rings, cups, segments to name a few.
Coated on backing made of paper or cloth in the form of sheets, strips or belts.
Looses held in some liquid or solid carrier (for lapping, polishing, tumbling) or propelled by Centrifugal force, Air or Water pressure against the work surface.

The General Applications for Abrasive Processes are

Cleaning of surfaces also the coarse removal of excess material- such as rough of hand grinding in foundries to remove gates and raisers.
Shaping such as in form grinding and tool sharpening.
Sizing, a general objective, but of primary importance in precision grinding
Surface finish improvement either primary as in lapping, honing and polishing or as a secondary objective in other type of abrasive processes.
Separating as in cut off or slicing operations.

The main field of application of abrasive processes is in metal working because of the capacity of the abrasive grains to penetrate into even the hardest metal and alloys. However the great hardness of the abrasive grains makes the process also preferred for working other hard materials such as stones, glass and certain types of plastics. Abrasive processes are also chosen for working relatively soft materials such as wood, rubber etc., for such reasons as high stock removal rates, long lasting cutting ability, good form control and fine finish of the worked surface.

COMPONENTS  OF GRINDING WHEEL

The abrasive grains which does the actual cutting work.

The bond which holds the abrasive grains together.

ABRASIVES

An abrasive grain is a hard tough substance containing many sharp projecting cutting edged. It is both natural as well as synthetic

Modern Synthetic abrasives allow accurate control over the physical properties of the abrasive grain. This helps to ensure that grinding wheel can be manufactured with consistent cutting properties.

Aluminium Oxide

It is an electric furnace abrasive manufactured from mineral bauxite in a purer form. It is a tough abrasive due to the presence of Titanium Oxide in the abrasive therefore resisting fracture and lasts longer. It is very suitable for grinding high tensile strength materials like carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel allied iron and satellite. It is available in several forms such as Grey, White and Pink for verified wheels, brown for Resinoid wheels.

Silicon Carbide

It is also an electric furnace abrasive manufactured from pure silica sand, ground coke and saw dust. It is a harder abrasive than aluminum oxide but is more brittle therefore making it more effective in grinding low tensile strength material such as cast iron and non-metallic materials.

It is available in two forms: Black for vitrified as well as resinoid and Green for specific applications such as carbide tool grinding.

BOND

Resinoid bond

It is an organic bond by a number of different organic polymers based on Phenol Formaldehyde polymer which is thermo setting in nature. Filters are added to improve the mechanical properties or to act as grinding aids on dry grinding operations. The resin structure is cured by heating in ovens under carefully controlled conditions at temperature under 300ºC.

These wheels are tougher and less rigid than vitrified wheels and can be subjected to impact on or sudden loads or high operating speeds often with the aid of fabric or steel ring reinforcement and in rough grinding operations requiring rapid stock removal. The lower modules of elasticity also allow finer finishes to be achieved and this is the other measure application area for resinoid bonded wheels.
